The Sheyenne River Valley National Scenic Byway stretches 63 miles along the breathtaking Sheyenne River Valley, from Baldhill Dam to Lisbon, following ancient Native American foot paths and pioneer wagon trails.

Along the way you will find Little Yellowstone Park, two log cabins, 27 award winning interpretive panels, many unique bird species and 6 dams. We will provide step on guides for bus tours– check at the Rosebud Visitor Center.

Midwest Living magazine suggests this roadway as a “Fall Color Drive” and the route was also listed in National Geographic’s Guide to Scenic Highways and Byways.

Want to see a hundred bird species in one day? It’s possible in the Sheyenne River Valley. Birders in the Fort Ransom State Park have reported seeing over 140 species in the park. 15 of these species are on the National Heritage Program’s state rare species list.

The Sheyenne River Valley includes national grasslands with native prairie remnants of mixed and tall grass prairies and oak savannah river riparian areas. Target species in this area include: Prairie sparrows (10 species), abundant ducks and waterfowl, wrens, mockingbirds and thrashers, phoebes and flycatchers, prairie chickens, sharp-tailed grouse, gray partridge, and more.

This prairie pothole region features long days and short nights in the summer, making it possible to get the most out of a day. Prairie sparrows sing into the early afternoon. The trick is knowing where to find the birds. Experience the backroads of the valley and maneuver around the area to get the most out of your birding experience.
