Class Description:
Immerse yourself in the calming, meditative practice of Sashiko embroidery during this two-day retreat at the historic Nome Schoolhouse. Guided by award-winning artist Jeane Vogel, you'll explore the traditional Japanese technique of Sashiko, learning to create stunning patterns with simple yet meaningful stitches. This class is perfect for both beginners and experienced stitchers, offering a blend of cultural exploration, history, and hands-on practice.

Skills Covered:

• Understanding and selecting Sashiko patterns
• Drawing a grid on fabric
• Placing patterns on the grid
• Basic Sashiko stitching techniques

Materials:
All materials are included, though participants are welcome to bring their own solid-Colored fabric.

FRI, MAR 28TH - Check-In and Enjoy the Schoolhouse

SAT, MAR 29TH - DAY ONE:

• Introduction to the history of Sashiko
• Viewing samples and exploring potential applications
• Drawing a grid on white cotton fabric
• Selecting and placing 4-6 Sashiko patterns on the fabric to create a final sampler

SUN, MAR 30TH - DAY TWO:

• Hands-on stitching practice with a focus on completing your Sashiko sampler

As a special bonus, if time and conditions allow, Jeane will bring cyanotype-coated fabric swatches for additional creative exploration.

About the Artist:

Stitching and weaving are calming, meditative practices. Fiber artists stand on the shoulders of thousands of generations of grandmothers who provided the basics of life but didn't forget to add beauty. Jeane Vogel is an award-winning artist who infuses her work with a sense of comfort and warmth. Her woven pieces and stitched photographs are celebrated and collected across North America and Europe. As a Fellow in the Jewish Art Salon and a member of the American Guild of Judaic Art and Women's Caucus for Art, Jean brings a wealth of knowledge and inspiration to her teaching.
